BOS turns down a resolution to fund program through vehicle infraction fees

The Board of Supervisors did not pass a resolution that would add a fee of $5.00 to all vehicle infractions with the funds raised going to the Sheriff Dept program promoting cell phone carrying drivers to report other drivers on the road driving erratically.  Macedo stated "it would apply to anything other than a fix-it ticket."

The program has been up and running for the past few years and has been privately funded by a concerned citizen, Mr Sheldon Bissel. Captain Macedo thanked Mr Bissel for his perseverance in making this program a reality and helping to find potential creative ways to fund it for the future.

Sheriff Dept Press release re: Update 11-23-12 fatal plane crash

November 23rd Plane Crash Results in One Fatality

(San Andreas, CA) on 11/23/12 at approx. 3:45 PM, Calaveras County Sheriff’s deputies and local and state fire departments responded to a report of a single plan crash in a field located on the east side of Highway 49, approx. ¾ mile south of the Calaveras County Airport. The pilot, identified as Russell Hackler (68) of Danville, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

According to witness statements, Mr. Hackler was testing a self-built single-engine amphibious plane on the day of the crash. On the day’s third test flight of the plane the plane went into a spiral. Around the time the plane went into the spiral the right wing was seen tearing away from the fuselage. Mr. Hackler’s son, Russell Hackler, Jr. (38) of Livermore, who was watching the test flight from the airport, saw the plane fall from the sky, but did not see it crash. Mr. Hackler was reported to have been an experienced pilot.

The exact cause of the crash is unknown at this time. The investigation has been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board. It is expected that it will take several weeks before a cause of the crash is determined.

State Controller unveils new Government Compensation website - press release

State Controller John Chiang launched a completely redesigned website showing wage and benefit data for public employees across California. The renamed site – publicpay.ca.gov – offers maps, search functions and custom report-building tools.  It also includes the latest compensation data available, and allows users to download raw data for their own research.

"Real accountability begins with empowering the public with easy access to the budgeting and payroll decisions of our civic leaders," said Chiang. "Through innovation, California can strike a blow against abusive compensation practices that thrive on poor transparency.
"This site is completely data-driven, and allows users to dive right into the numbers they want. But it does remain a work in progress, and my office will continue to improve and expand this public pay project," said Chiang, who launched the original site in 2010 site after ordering cities and counties to report payroll data to the State.

Letter from Copper Hills 4-H Youth

At last Friday night's Town Square tree lighting ceremony, the Copper Hills 4-H Club presented a plaque to "Mrs. Claus" to thank Castle and Cooke, Linda Stefanik, the Copperopolis Town Square Management, and the community for their support of local 4-H youth. The club was in charge of the parking concession for the Copper Concert Series in October and, along with Bret Harte High School FFA who loaned the performance stage for the series, allowed them to earn $2800. With these monies, the club will be able to help its members with the many expenses related to showing their animals and other projects at the Calaveras County Fair in May, along with enabling them to give back to their community. Thank you for supporting local youth!
