Copper Fire District Makes Changes to Hiring Policy

After a comprehensive review of all district policies, revisions were made to district policies concerning discipline, recruitment and drug and alcohol policies. Larry Crabtree, a Fire Department Safety & labor Management presented the revisions to the audience at Thursday nights CFPD Board meeting. The once grey areas are clear, and the “language is almost identical to the language in the personnel rules of the County.”

The recruitment policy is a proactive policy allowing the district to recruit, exam, and create a list of potential candidates six months to a year prior to a potential vacancy. “Putting an objective system in place is the key to a qualified pool of candidates.” A timeline will be established for exams and qualification requirements.

Any applicant may be eliminated if they do not carry the minimum licensing or certification required for the job for which they are applying. Director Marks commented, “We don’t want to hold anyone’s hands.” Reiterating that applicants should be qualified when they apply. Chairman Maness added, “The word ‘may’ allows the Board the option of hiring someone who may be currently becoming licensed, or completing education.”

Jobs will be advertised and special needs of the District will be made known.

“This is not the good ol boys club anymore.”  Said one citizen.
